Can you talk a bit about yourself?

How many times, as not native speakers are we ask to just talk about ourselves, and we are like “ nothing here”. I’m not a native English speaker, although I know the language since my childhood, and I learn, study, talk, read a lot in English; even I traveled to London and I felt the experience.

But is hard if you are not talking all the time, is hard depending on what type of learning we had related to English. Some people learn on their own, reading, and with movies, and learn a lot of slang and stuff like that. But on the other side, we have people, like me, that learn old fashion way, from books, with grammar, with rules and all that other stuff, so then we don’t have so much vocabulary as we spect or wish to have.

By the time someone what to know a bit about you (usually this question is used on work interviews, to evaluate how fluent you are taking in English), about what is your passion besides work is complex to explain, is hard to put in the correct words, all your feelings, your hobbies and some from your daily basis.

How I can be prepared for this? Well, my answer will be:

Practice, Practice, Practice!

And how? Well, that is a really different thing, because we can find several ways to practice:

  • Watch a movie ( without subtitles in your language)
  • Watch some video ( without subtitles in your language)
  • Enroll in a course that is only in English
  • Read a short article ( could be on medium, linked, etc)
  • Read something that fancies you
  • Search for new words in the dictionary ( I recommend: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/)
  • Talk with someone in English about your day
  • Read aloud for yourself
  • Change the language of your phone to English
  • Write your ideas ( in English of course)
  • Chat with people in English

BE OPEN. BE KIND. BE RESPECTFUL. BE PATIENCE
